As an owner and user of an Electric Fat Tire mountain bike for over six years, I can attest to its ability to keep me in shape and ride over any terrain - road, trail, beach, and snow-covered paths. Most states define a motorized vehicle with a motor rating exceeding 751 watts (1HP) continuous. Only some states require a form of registration if it can exceed 20mph. Hence, most E-Bikes are not by definition motorized vehicles and can ride on almost all paths and trails unless specifically indicated (no E-Bikes). They all have an adjustable boost and the ability to turn the electric motor off. I still have the original battery and have only exhausted the battery once, at the end of a 77mile ride! The beauty of the E-Bike is that I can extend my riding range from a typical 10-mile ride to over 30 miles, so a little less effort on hills allows me to ride further and achieve
a more intensive workout while exploring more terrain.

There are three "classes" of E-Bikes:
Type 1 E-Bike: "Pedal Assist" is an electric bicycle on which you must pedal to use the motor assisting your motion, and it will stop assistance when you reach 20mph. No license is needed or age limit.
Type 2 E-Bike: "Pedal Assist with a Throttle" in addition to Type 1 features, you can choose only to use the throttle to operate the bike, and you can also pedal as you see fit with a maximum assisted speed of 20mph. No license is needed or age limit.
Type 3 E-Bike: "Pedal Assist with a Throttle up to 28mph" applies Type 1 features with no license needed. The rider must be at least 17 years old, and wearing a helmet is required.

With these newer E-Bikes, you can easily decide to commute to work, and depending on your habits, you may not need a change of clothes or recharge the battery until you return home. The newer LED bike lighting systems are also a great investment to help ensure your visibility on the road.
The ultimate goal of electric transportation is to recharge the vehicle's battery using renewable energy, creating a "net-zero transportation" solution minimizing your impact on our planet.
